Presentation at the National Centre for Scientific Research 'Demokritos'
Yesterday, Professor Yiannis Vardaxoglou gave an invited lecture to an audience at the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications at the National Centre for Scientific Research - Demokritos, in Greece. The Institute conducts research in telecommunications, networking, technologies for the World Wide Web and Intelligent Information Systems.
Yiannis gave an overview of the SYMETA project introducing the concept and uses of MetaAtoms in Electromagnetic materials. In the SYMETA project MetaAtoms are 3D-printed multi-layered metamaterials with different periodicities of the metallic rectangular meso scale cuboids. Potentially, the MetaAtoms could be varied in constitution and geometry to augment a variety of artificial magneto-dielectric properties. The periodicity indicates the spaces between adjacent elements. The effect of the space on the effective EM properties is examined by placing the 3D-printed samples in a waveguide or on a resonator. Some of the these structures have been applied in engineering applications such as antennas and microwave lenses.
