On June 5th, Chairman of SYMETA's Industry Steering Group, Dr Peter de Maagt, addressed students at the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Metamaterials at the University of Exeter. The Centre is training researchers in Metamaterials - fabricated microstructures which can have properties beyond those found in nature. These materials are emerging as an important new class with applications in many technology areas, from energy harvesting, through perfect imaging, to communication, and the much-hyped ‘cloaking’. They are central to SYMETA's research and Exeter leads on the development of MetaAtoms within the project.
Peter de Maagt works at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC), European Space Agency, Noordwijk, The Netherlands where he heads up the Antenna and Sub-Millimetre Waves Section of the Radio Frequency Payloads and Technology Division. His research interests are in the area of millimeter and sub-millimeter-wave reflector and planar integrated antennas, quasioptics, electromagnetic bandgap antennas, and millimeter- and sub-millimeter-wave components.
Peter chairs SYMETA's Industrial Steering Group which is drawn from a variety of companies from multiple sectors who share an interest in SYMETA's research objectives. Peter was visiting Exeter to chair a meeting of the Group and welcomed the opportunity to talk to research students about opportunities in the space sector and to provide insights into building a career after completing a PhD. A full room (despite a 9.00am start!) and a lively question and answer session demonstrated that interest in the space sector was high among the research students.
