We are looking for two talented PhD students to join the SYMETA project based at Loughborough University.
Successful candidates will have either a 1st or high 2.1 in a relevant discipline, or a relevant Masters degree marked greater than 68%. We are looking for people who are open-minded to collaborative work and keen to innovate in their field. The opportunities are:
This opportunity will involve enabling state-of-the-art materials processing and future communications technologies. You will investigate the circuit modelling of AM metamaterials in high frequency circuitry such as beam steering antennas, filters, diplexers and couplers. Metamaterials are designed and manufactured to have electromagnetic properties not normally found in naturally occurring materials. At the project’s centre is the creation of novel structures for high frequency electronic circuitry challenging conventional design and manufacture paradigms. Working with colleagues in test and measurement, physics, materials and manufacturing, you will support the development of a suite of circuit models to be deployed in the design of microwave circuits.
An excellent mathematician, with a strong interest in computer modelling, your project will combine both theoretical (modelling) work and experimental verification research to derive the equivalent metamaterial circuit models for use in design software.

Alongside colleagues in electronics circuit modelling, materials and manufacturing, you will investigate applying AM metamaterials to produce integrated high frequency circuits such as beam steering antennas, lens, filters, and couplers.
Metamaterials are created to have electromagnetic properties that are not normally found in nature. At the project’s centre is the creation of metamaterial based structures for high frequency electronic circuitry challenging the conventional design and manufacturing paradigms. You will be practical and able to test and understand the performance of metamaterial electronics, while studying how electromagnetic performance relates to and varies with manufacturing processes and constituent materials. You will gain experience in microwave test and measurement techniques, while developing an understanding of materials science and manufacturing technologies.
Exposure to several engineering disciplines within a world-class team while developing as a PhD qualified engineer/scientist in Materials.
Working on a national research programme alongside industry.

For both posts the preferred start date is October 2016 but there may be some flexibility for the right candidate. The stipend is for three years at £14,296 per annum plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. This award is restricted to applicants eligible to UK/EU fees only.
